Over the years we have had hundreds of puppies pass through our school. In this time i have noticed a trend.A trend that is so obvious that i now ask the owners when i see it.Puppy pre school. Apart from the pups comming to us at 10 weeks old they are attending when 12 – 14 weeks old after they have gone through a 4 – 6 week course at the local vet held puppy pre school. The owners seem to think as via their conversations with me that their puppy is trained or semi trained because of this pre school. As the saying goes “a little knowledge is dangerous”
Apart from the conversations most puppies that i have seen that are fearfull ,anxious or just plain mannerless seem to have come from one of these puppy pre schools.
I ask myself why is it so obvious?
Well lets break it down..
During these courses you will teach your puppy how to sit, drop etc, toilet training, puppy socialisation, grooming, feeding, biting and the list goes on. all in 4-6 weeks.Expecting it to take only a few weeks to train your puppy, is the same as expecting your child to be educated after finishing preschool, although its a great start, its still a long road ahead!
Not even the worlds greatest dog trainers could achieve this.
Training your dog is more than a couple of week’s commitment, which is why we don’t offer set 3-6 week courses. Our class programs are tailored towards real world obedience and behaviour skills that are crucial to having a well adjusted pet.
Experienced Trainers for Inexperienced dogsProper puppy training we believe is of the utmost importance. That’s why we use our most experienced trainers for puppy classes. Ones that can detect problems or emerging issues. Ones that know socialising doesn’t mean a free for all where puppies will be trampled on ,growled at or mouthed.
As unfortunately, most inexperienced trainers who run classes, believe that “socialisation” means nothing more than playing with other puppies. What your puppy experiences during their critical periods, has lasting effects. I routinely see older dogs, that are fear aggressive of other dogs due to bad free for all experiences at puppy school.
